Artist’s Statement Isaac Stackell/Isaac Images

Images have almost always been a revelation. Wherever I am they flash into my brain. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It’s been that way since I was a kid, one eye closed – being the camera before I ever owned one.

Other times, a concept or an idea is the revelation. These images are inspired by movies, theater, books, music. They are mulled over, composed, propped, staged, shot, and reshot. This approach is a result of many years as a commercial photographer.

Either way, I have developed a theme that conveys an appreciation of the beauty of an instant in time, visual puns and a self-deprecating sense of humor, with a native New Yorker’s offbeat edge.

Biography

Isaac Stackell is from Brooklyn, born 1953. From an early age, his interests have been photography, writing, theater, and advertising.
As a commercial and portrait photographer he learned lighting, color relationships, composition, Photoshop and printing on-the-job, and holds no formal degrees in photography. His work appears on the B&H Photo and Gradus Group websites, in dozens of catalogs, trade publications, textbooks and greeting cards.

His personal work ranges from straightforward landscapes, to whimsical portraits and wordplay images, to Community Theater. He prefers a crisp and realistic image, but will veer occasionally in the blurred and surreal. Either way, he “sees” photographs – they call to him, and taunt him if he is rushed and cannot stop to capture them. But, he strives to return, in the right light, in the right moment.
